My artistic practice moves fluidly between two distinct yet interconnected bodies of work: one deeply inspired by the majestic form and symbolism of whales, and the other rooted in the intricate fusion of Korean and Western aesthetics. The whales’ forms, both graceful and rugged, serve as a powerful source of inspiration, embodying wisdom, endurance, and an intuitive connection to the mysteries of life. Their long migrations resonate with themes of resilience and guidance, reflecting my own evolution through art and self-discovery.
At the same time, my work explores the delicate interplay between cultural identity and artistic expression by blending Korean motifs, Hangul, and Western influences. Drawing from my South Korean heritage and background in visual arts, I blend traditional elements with contemporary design, fostering a dialogue that bridges past and present, as well as East and West. These two approaches—one deeply personal and spiritual, the other a study in cultural synthesis—may seem distinct, yet they share a common thread: a search for balance, harmony, and meaning. Whether through the fluid forms of whales or the structured intricacy of cultural patterns, my work seeks to bridge worlds, honoring both the natural and cultural landscapes that shape my artistic voice.
Originally from South Korea, I spent most of my adult life in Los Angeles, working in the film industry as an animator and visual effects artist. Some years ago, I discovered ceramic art and was instantly captivated by its tactile and expressive possibilities. This passion led me to enroll in ceramic art courses at Glendale College in L.A., where I completed a program in 2018. I then established a small home studio, dedicating myself to pottery for a few years. In 2020, my husband’s work brought us to London, where I now continue my practice in a communal studio in the heart of the city.
In 2024, I was the recipient of the Established Makers category of the London Potters Annual Makers Award. I was also the winner of both the Judges’ Choice and People’s Choice awards during London Potters’ annual exhibition at Morley College Gallery in London. Additionally, I am a selected member of the Craft Potters Association in the U.K. My work is represented by a few galleries in the U.K., Japan, and the U.S., as well as through my website.
